Monet’s work seems to take less direct cognitive processing to appreciate. I find his work (two hanging in my home) to evoke more emotional calm and quiescence.

So I had a quick read and I don’t think that they ever really get to the crux of the reason poets/artists/writers lean towards the sad/horrific. Basically happiness is uneventful. Stories of people who fall in love and live happily ever after are nice, but stories of unrequited love, or the many layers of darkness that people bring upon themselves are much more interesting reading or viewing, because either the viewer/reader can come away feeling good that their life isn’t as bad as what they just read or that they can sympathise with the feelings and it takes them on an emotional rollercoaster. There is a who psychology behind it which is probably too deep for the comments section… but it’s the same reason people what soap operas or series because it is a feel good feeling that their life isn’t as awful or eventful of what they are seeing on the screen

I’m not sure the article tried to explain why sadness is desired, only that it seems to be a phenomena that it is, if not a goal, a condition of elevated consciousness. Stupid happy vs melancholic reflection, like they were granting permission to be sad, and that such emotion is a sign of heightened awareness.
I do see your point: simple happy vs complex gloom. Your explanation of comparison explains some of it, but I think there’s more of an intellectual aspect to being forlorn and woeful.
